Jewish Salami Day
It’s bizarre. It’s funny. And somehow... it’s a business lesson too.
Yesterday was Jewish Salami Day.
If that passed you by, don't worry – it’s a day that only exists in my own weird world.
And the reason it exists here in World of Dave is because, every year on 13 May, Facebook serves up a salami-based memory that makes me chuckle.
It’s a memory that also contains a powerful business lesson – one that I think will help you see things in a new way.
Here’s what happened….
A few years ago, while looking in the fridge for an afternoon snack, I came across something rather odd.
Two packs of food with the word "Jews" written on them in black marker pen.
I was surprised (to say the least) that anyone would have done this.
But what surprised me even more was the fact that the food we appeared to be reserving for Jewish visitors was a cured pork product.
I asked the Food Quartermaster (aka Mrs M) why she'd done this, but she denied writing anything on any of the food in the fridge.
She told me these were packs of pepperoni that our daughter had brought home from school as leftovers after a lesson where they'd been making pizzas.
But she had no idea why the teacher would have written "Jews" on the packets.
And I couldn't figure it out either.
Admittedly, as a convent school, their religious studies teaching tended to be very Catholic-based.
But surely even staff at a convent school would have a basic understanding of Kosher food laws?
It was only some time later that I figured out what had happened.
Do you remember when you were a kid and someone showed you how if you typed
55378008
into your calculator and then turned it upside down it would spell out
BOOBLESS
Well, I ended up doing the same thing with one of the packets of pepperoni.
And once the packet was upside down, I realised that what the teacher had actually written was:
SM7C
which was my daughter's initials, followed by the class she was in.
A few weeks later, once I'd stopped laughing, I posted this story and a photo of the pepperoni packets on Facebook – much to the amusement of my friends and family.
And so now, every year in the middle of May, it pops up as a Facebook memory.
And every year, it reminds me that when you're facing a problem or a challenge in your business it's important to try to look at the problem from every possible angle.
Because if you do, you're far more likely to spot a solution.
When you're stuck on a particular challenge – whether it's a pricing dilemma, a client who keeps pushing boundaries, or trying to figure out why your lead generation isn't working – simply taking a step back and looking at it differently can lead to breakthrough moments.
What seems like 'not enough clients' from one angle might actually be 'taking on the wrong types of clients' when viewed differently.
Or what feels like 'too much work, not enough time' might reveal itself as 'lack of clear boundaries and systems' when examined from another perspective.
I hope that whatever challenges you’re facing in your business at the moment, this email has given you some food for thought.
At the very least, I hope it's given you a 376616 (pop that in your calculator and turn it upside down).
And now I'd love to hear from you….
What's a business problem you've solved recently by looking at it from a different angle?
Or what's something you're stuck on right now that might benefit from being turned upside down and examined differently?
Just hit reply and let me know. I’d genuinely love to hear your thoughts, and I read every response personally.
All the best,
David.
